SEN Grotto Sessions
This Christmas, we're proud to offer a calm, welcoming, and inclusive Santa's Grotto specially designed for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
We know that busy Christmas attractions can sometimes be overwhelming, so we've created a relaxed experience where every child can enjoy the magic of meeting Santa in a way that suits them.
What makes our SEN sessions special?
-
Extended 20 minute time slots – longer than a standard grotto visit, allowing your child plenty of time to feel comfortable and enjoy the experience without being rushed.
-
Wheelchair accessible – our grotto is fully accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy a magical visit with Santa.
-
A quieter, more relaxed environment with fewer visitors.
-
Patient, friendly staff who understand that every child is unique.
-
Flexible interactions with Santa—whether your child wants to chat, wave, or simply take it all in at their own pace.
-
Dedicated sensory area
-
Downloadable communication board - bespoke communication board tailored to our experience. Sent to you via email ahead of your booking to assist children with communication needs
-
A special Christmas gift and a sleigh bell for every child
-
Take your own photos - Time to capture those precious festive memories with family photos. Take your own pictures and videos, theres no pressure to have to spend extra money on printed pictures.
Our goal is simple: to create a magical Christmas experience where every child feels welcome, supported, and able to enjoy the wonder of meeting Santa in a safe and comfortable environment.
Spaces are limited to ensure each family receives the extra time and attention they deserve, so we recommend booking early.

Our daughter was our inspiration
Being parents of a SEN child comes with enough challenges, and Christmas time can be another challenge.
Our inspiration for introducing a SEN session was our daughter, Darcey. Diagnosed autistic and currently non-verbal.
Although some SEN children won’t struggle, there’s some children out there that will struggle with the stuff neurotypical children won’t notice.
However, everywhere is busier, there’s more lights, more noises, new smells.
And that’s without adding a grotto into the works. Going into a strange environment with strangers who want to ask questions.
Some SEN children may not understand, they may struggle to communicate. They might find the whole experience so overwhelming.
And for the parents? There may be the failed expectations of a lovely grotto experience, the picture with Santa.
And even more so if the parents have other children, other neurotypical children.
You may be struck with the guilt of “do we take the children to see Santa? The SEN child might cause a fuss and the neurotypical children won’t experience the magic”
They might question if it’s worth it, if they should take the kids separately.
This all comes from a place of experience.
We have 4 children, 1 SEN, and the other 3 neurotypical.
For our daughter, aged 4, Christmas isn’t exciting for her. In fact, the change of routine on Christmas morning is traumatic for her. She doesn’t get Santa, she doesn’t get the fuss, she certainly doesn’t like going to grottos. (The idea was to get a picture of her in the SEN area pictured, but that didn’t transpire)
In previous years we’ve battled with the screaming, the embarrassment, we’ve battled with the horrible emotions and anxiety that surrounds any sort of Christmas activity.
And that’s why last year, when we took over the garden centre, we wanted to make it our priority to make a grotto experience where SEN children can be included. And for families to experience a more relaxed grotto experience.
For families like us with SEN and neurotypical children to experience it as a family without worrying that one of the children is missing out.
Our SEN sessions allow families with both SEN and neurotypical children to have a more relaxed experience.
We have included a SEN area with sensory aids to help your child regulate. (A bean bag, a furry rug, spinning chair, sensory tube light, peanut ball, textured floor tiles, a basket of fidget toys) We are opting for low level music and lights. And a longer time slot as we understand it can take a little time for a SEN child to regulate.
There’s so pressure to make your child sit with Santa and have a picture, again we’ve experienced the battle that comes with that.
If your child feels comfortable in the sensory area and for Santa to sit with them, that’s where their experience with Santa can be.
Our aim is to ensure families can still experience the magic of Christmas all together 🎄🎅

Reviews
Last year we welcomed 85 SEN children into our grotto, that was over 40% of our grotto tickets!
We had amazing feedback from all the families that visited

We've been in today with my 16 year old disabled son, his little brother and his little nephew. As a parent it was a huge joy to watch all 3 boys get to see Santa together in a beautiful, calm and inclusive environment with no judgment. Santa and Mrs Claus were truly wonderful, patient, warm and friendly. The presents for all 3 boys were perfect and very well received.
I am grateful for you setting this up and embracing children and adults of all ages and abilities.

Thank you for the most wonderful, accommodating Santa experience ever!
We have found the real SEN Santa and Mrs Claus. The grotto was breathtaking, so calm, so beautiful!
The detail was amazing! No queue, no chaos, no rush. A relaxed one to one experience with friendly chat and lots of photo opportunities. Santa even gave up his throne for my daughter!
Louis has never coped with Santa experiences as it's usually rushed, busy, over stimulating and noisy. The organisers are definitely very SEN aware and covered every base to the very finest detail! There was nothing I'd change!
